La Defense: an unexpected touristic area
More than just being a business district, La Defense also features unpredictable treasures: trendy shopping malls, breathtaking view of Paris, surprising architecture and pieces of art… Since 2009, La Defense has been classified "Touristic Area".
Design and architecture
Among more than 100 towers that reflect one century of modern architecture, take time to look for some of the 60 statues that are scattered all over La Defense. If you are enough observant, your walk will transform into a real treasure hunt. To help you, here are some of the most famous statues:
- "La Défense de Paris" [1983-Barrias], which gave its name to the business center
- "Signaux Lumineux" [1990-Takis], few steps away from Fraser Suites Harmonie, inside the basin
- "L'Araignée rouge" [1976-Calder], inevitable
La Defense is also 1st shopping center in Europe. With its 2 shopping malls, Westfield Les Quatre Temps (110,000 sqm / 250 shops) and Le Cnit (100,000 sqm) opened 7 days a week, it offers you a large choice of stores (luxury goods, fashion, sports, technology, etc.) and restaurants, but also a cinema featuring original version movies.
All around La Defense business center, many green spaces have been fitted out to contrast nature and architecture, and to make passers-by breath.
During spring and summer, a huge grass area is installed in front of the Grande Arche to create a restful place to eat or relax.

The major Paris La Défense Arena concert hall also contributes to its cultural programme.
